999: Behind the Scenes at Police HQ

What happens when you dial 999? How are these calls dealt with and police officer’s dispatched? Members of A&S SAR were treated to a ‘behind-the-scenes’ look at the communications centre at Avon and Somerset Police HQ this week.

Inspector Lee Moore, Force Incident Manager, kindly took the members through the intricate and complex procedures for the call centre, how resources get allocated and peaks in demand managed. The professional approach to this process was obvious and very impressive.

Importantly for A&S SAR the mapping and location software was explained for members to understand the capabilities during search operations.A&S SAR members at Police HQ looking at the call handling procedures

The visit was an important awareness exercise for all involved and A&S SAR would like to pass their thanks on to Inspector Moore for his time and interest.

A&S SAR is an emergency service run by volunteers that relies entirely on donations and other in-kind support. The donation is gratefully received and A&S SAR wish to pass on their thanks to the organising committee.

Mendip Family Raise Funds

A Mendip family has raised £2000 for A&S SAR as thanks for their son’s life being saved. Their son was driving a vintage tractor that overturned, trapping him and causing extensive internal injuries. Duncan Massey, chairman of A&S SAR, attended in his role as a volunteer First Responder with Great Western Ambulance Service. He was first on the scene to give life saving treatment. The family held a black tie ball recently to raise the money. Shaun Pearce is making a good recovery after the accident. A&S SAR are extremely grateful for the donation.
